Values
There are plenty of new venture sites with theoretical and philosophical approaches. We prefer to focus on practical and actionable help instead. That means our work will always be a lot more about nuts and bolts than theory and philosophy.
We believe this site is an ideal reflection of how we approach our mission. We provide enormous amounts of information to address a wide spectrum of needs and always strive for simplicity by:
1) Stripping unnecessary technical jargon from our communications
2) Distilling dizzying amounts of start-up knowledge into actionable information
3) Breaking complex processes into logical and manageable parts
Approach
There couldn’t possibly be more satisfying work. We are a small firm focused only on helping small firms. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
We are as passionate helping those with simple goals as those with complex goals. For this site, we had to make practical decisions about a new venture "frame-of-reference." We chose a medium-complexity frame-of-reference as a good middle ground.
That means if your plans are more modest, you may find some areas slightly more involved than necessary for your needs. To address that situation, we call out areas that are specifically relevant to your situation with this symbol.
Finally, we eat, sleep, and breath small business. Don't hesitate to call or email us with any questions you have no matter how big or small.
Summary of DIY Information
Below is a summary of the Starting and Building sections in the uppler left margins.
Starting a Business?
For ease of understanding, we break the start-up process into four logical phases: Groundwork, Planning, Prerparation, & Launch. Here's a summary of each:
Good ideas usually spark a burst of motivation. Make the most productive use of that boundess energy to get a taste of some of the important first steps involved in developing a business. This section also includes a wide range of information about idea validation, business readiness, and goal setting.
What are the smartest first steps to take? What are the hardest parts of starting a business? How do you effectively confront the hardest parts? How do you best assess readiness: business, personal, and household? What can be done to start testing the commercial viability of the idea?
For most people, Groundwork is an informal, "kitchen table" effort. If progress is mostly positive, or if there are major unknowns to resolve, the next step is normally Business Planning - or slightly more formal, research-based efforts.
One important result of the research process is the realization that there are usually many ways to tweak ideas and numerous ways to enter markets.
A key outcome of most planning efforts is a written business plan that incorporates relevant research into a business framework specifically designed around your individual goals, capabilities, and state of readiness.
If you've done the right amount of planning work, you'll have a roadmap that shows you exactly how to launch and build your business, including how to prepare during the time leading up to the launch.
When the big day comes, you will see all the benefits of planning and preparation come to life. Many people also have a critical task list to make sure the most important work gets handled correctly from the start.
Building a Business?
We are in the process of writing an overview for this section. For now see our Growing Pains Section.
